Many homeowners tend to choose the same radiator accessories directly without considering adaptability differences brought by distinct heating systems. Municipal central heating and wall-hung boiler independent heating are the two most common hot-water radiator systems for home use. They differ in pressure, water quality, water temperature and circulation mode. Therefore, matching selection of valves, filters, air vents, sealing parts and other accessories is required. Well-matched accessories ensure stable system operation. Improper selection may lead to blockage, leakage, poor circulation or ineffective temperature regulation.
For municipal central heating, pipeline pressure fluctuates relatively obviously. The pipe network water contains rust, sediment and other impurities, and water quality varies greatly. Thus, accessories are required to feature reliable pressure resistance, corrosion resistance and impurity interception capability.
Copper valves with stable pressure resistance and corrosion-resistant valve bodies are preferred. For two-pipe systems, high-resistance thermostatic valves can be equipped to facilitate hydraulic balance and avoid uneven heating among different radiators. For single-pipe bypass systems, three-way thermostatic valves suitable for single-pipe structures can be adopted to guarantee flow distribution. Valves with narrow internal flow channels are not recommended for central heating, as they may get stuck by impurities after long-term operation.
Filters are essential accessories for central heating. A filter shall be installed on the water supply side to intercept solid impurities from the pipe network, protect radiators and valve cavities, and reduce valve core wear. The filter screen can be disassembled and cleaned regularly to lower the risk of clogging.
Manual air vents are the primary choice, preferably mounted at the top high points of radiators. Air accumulation inside the system is common, and repeated air bleeding is required at the beginning of the heating season. Sealing accessories such as sealing rings and connectors shall adapt to system pressure fluctuations. Heat-resistant and anti-aging sealing materials are selected to reduce seepage risks caused by pressure changes.
Wall-hung boiler independent heating is a closed independent circulation system with stable pressure and fewer impurities in water. This system focuses on circulation resistance to maintain circulation flow, and puts forward higher requirements for temperature control.
When selecting valves, priority should be given to flow channel resistance. Valve bodies with sufficient inner diameter and low flow resistance are preferred to avoid flow restriction that weakens circulation and slows radiator heating. Thermostatic valves with good sensitivity are recommended for independent room temperature control and energy saving. In closed systems, the internal structure of valve bodies shall be smooth to reduce water flow resistance.
Small simple filters can be adopted. Water in closed systems is relatively clean with little impurity generation, so high-density filter screens are unnecessary. The main purpose is to protect the heat exchanger of the wall-hung boiler.
For air exhaust accessories, besides manual air vents on radiators, automatic air vents can be added at high points of pipelines. Gas tends to separate out in closed circulation systems. Automatic air vents can continuously discharge accumulated air and reduce repeated manual air bleeding. Sealing accessories mainly adapt to stable pressure environments to prevent leakage during long-term closed circulation.
No matter which heating system is used, the caliber of valves must match radiator ports and pipe diameters. Mismatched calibers will change the hydraulic state of pipelines and affect heating performance. Fixed accessories including brackets and hangers are selected according to radiator weight and wall conditions. They are not affected by heating system types, yet firm installation protects joints from external pulling force.
In terms of material, copper valve bodies suit both systems. If alloy accessories are chosen, their heat resistance and corrosion resistance shall be evaluated. A pressure test shall be carried out after installation to confirm tight sealing of joints and normal opening and closing of valves.
Many homeowners copy the full set of accessories for central heating and use them for independent heating. High-resistance valves will increase circulation load and cause frequent start-stop of wall-hung boilers. On the contrary, low-pressure-resistant accessories used in central heating will face higher leakage risks under pressure fluctuation. For houses with dual heating systems, isolating valves shall be installed to physically separate the two systems and prevent cross-flow of different water bodies.
The selection of radiator accessories shall match the pressure, water quality and circulation characteristics of heating systems. Central heating prioritizes pressure resistance, corrosion resistance and impurity filtration. Wall-hung boiler independent heating focuses on low flow resistance, flexible temperature control and continuous air exhaust. Confirm your heating type before purchasing and select matched valves, filters and air exhaust accessories. If the system structure is complex, ask HVAC professionals to conduct on-site survey and determine the combination of accessories for stable operation of the whole heating system.
